Nags Head sits inside the standard delivery band most of our hosts cover — Corolla down to Nags Head — so for most rental homes between Milepost 9 and Whalebone Junction, the Jeep is dropped at your driveway. You arrange the delivery window during booking; some hosts use a meet-up point instead, and every vehicle's booking page states how its handoff works before you pay.
At handoff you get the keys, a walk-around, and the air-down briefing: where the tire deflator and gauge live, what pressure to run on sand, and where the air-up stations sit near the beach accesses. The tow strap and shovel are already in the back. Most renters never touch them — but they're there.

The Bodie Island ramps
The closest year-round beach driving to Nags Head: the Cape Hatteras National Seashore ORV ramps just south of Whalebone Junction, on the way to Oregon Inlet. National Park Service land — you'll need an NPS ORV permit from recreation.gov, and we walk every renter through getting one before handoff.

Drive the bypass north to Corolla, and where the pavement ends the 4x4 beach begins — no permit needed, wild Spanish mustangs living loose among the dunes, and the best drive on the Outer Banks. Allow more time in summer traffic, and go near low tide.

The town allows beach driving in the off-season — roughly October through April — with a town-issued permit, and closes the sand to vehicles for the summer. Check the Town of Nags Head's current rules before you plan on it. Summer visitors: the two drives above are open all year.

Nags Head is the Outer Banks' classic beach town — twelve miles of oceanfront from around Milepost 9 down to Whalebone Junction, with Jockey's Ridge State Park in the middle of it: the East Coast's tallest living sand dune, hang gliders coming off the ridge, and the sunset spot the whole beach shows up for. Top down, doors off, it's a five-minute run from anywhere in town.
From Whalebone Junction the road splits three ways — north up the beach towns, west over the causeway to Manteo and Roanoke Island, and south into the National Seashore toward the Bodie Island Lighthouse and the Hatteras ramps.
