Beach-capable Jeep Wrangler rental on Outer Banks sand at sunset
OBX Jeep Rental — Southern Shores
Southern Shores, NC — between Duck and Kitty Hawk, inside the standard delivery band

Jeep rental in Southern Shores.

Beach-ready Wranglers and 4x4s dropped at your Southern Shores rental home, recovery gear in the back. This is the quiet, wooded town where NC 12 narrows into Duck Road and the summer traffic sorts itself — and its beach is closed to every vehicle by ordinance, so this page is about the two drives you actually make from here (Carova north, the Bodie Island ramps south) and how beach parking really works when you are renting here.

How you get the Jeep

Delivered to your Southern Shores driveway.

Southern Shores sits inside the standard delivery band our hosts cover, which runs from Corolla down to Nags Head — no case-by-case quote, no meet-up two towns away. You pick a delivery window when you book, and the handoff happens where you are staying: keys, a walk-around, the air-down briefing, and where the deflator, gauge, tow strap and shovel live. Some hosts use a meet-up point instead; each vehicle’s booking page says how its handoff works before you pay.

Geography helps here. Southern Shores begins just past the point where US-158 off the Wright Memorial Bridge meets NC 12, and it is the last town before the road narrows into Duck Road — one lane each way, all the way to Corolla. That means a check-in-day handoff in Southern Shores is reachable before the northbound crawl builds, and the Jeep is in your driveway for the first beach morning rather than the second. It also means the Jeep is parked on the right side of the Duck bottleneck for an early run north.

Booking runs through OBX Drive, our local booking desk. Each Jeep’s listing shows its photos, daily and weekly rate, deposit and add-on prices up front. Nothing is charged on the request; OBX Drive confirms availability and the final price with you, then you pay by secure card checkout. No counter in Southern Shores, because there is no counter anywhere — the Jeep comes to you.

Corolla is the same band — pick your town in the booking bar above. Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head and Hatteras Island have their own guides.

The beach in town

Southern Shores’ beach is closed to vehicles. It says “jeeps” in the ordinance.

The Town Code does not leave room for interpretation. Section 20-109, Driving on the beach, makes it unlawful to operate “any vehicle of any type” on the ocean beach within the Town of Southern Shores, and the list of examples names motor vehicles, pickup trucks, beach buggies, jeeps, motorcycles and anything with one to four wheels and a motor. The only exceptions are ocean rescue, fire, police, the Coast Guard, public works and other town-authorized work such as beach-nourishment crews and turtle-nest volunteers. Section 20-108 bans driving on the dunes the same way. There is no winter season and no permit to buy — unlike Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head to the south — and the town’s Beach Rules page compresses it to one line: driving on the beach or dunes is prohibited. In practice, your rental Jeep never touches Southern Shores’ beach in any month.

Beach parking is the thing to know here, because it is not like Kitty Hawk. Southern Shores has no public beach access at all. Every walkover in town — more than thirty of them, from Thirteenth Avenue at the Duck line south to Ocean View Loop at the Kitty Hawk line — is owned and maintained by the Southern Shores Civic Association, a voluntary member association, not the town. Its two parking areas, Hillcrest Drive (beachfront parking, a gazebo, a volleyball court, an accessible viewing platform, and both stairs and a ramp to the sand; the town posts a lifeguard there in season) and Triangle Park at the split of Ocean Boulevard and Duck Road, require a current SSCA guest parking pass. If the home you rented is an SSCA member, your rental company or host supplies the passes; if you do not see them, ask before you drive to the beach.

The town’s own beach-access lots are a separate system: 135 spaces, permit-only for property owners, no guest passes, and SSCA or Chicahauk passes are not valid in them. Parking on any street or right-of-way is prohibited unless a sign says otherwise, and the town writes tickets. So the Jeep’s job on a Southern Shores beach day is the short hop to Hillcrest with the right pass on the windshield — and the sand driving happens in the two places it is allowed.

North: Carova

About 21 miles up NC 12 — through Duck and Corolla — the pavement ends and the beach becomes the road: no driving permit, no ramp hours, wild horses. Roughly 40 minutes in normal traffic by mapping estimate; on a summer weekend, far longer, because Duck Road is the only road north and every northern beach town shares it. Currituck County requires a beach-parking permit in summer, and the horses get a fifty-foot bubble by county ordinance.

South: the Bodie Island ramps

The nearest National Seashore sand is Ramp 4, just south of the Oregon Inlet Campground across from the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center — about 25 miles and 40 to 50 minutes depending on the Nags Head lights. National Park Service land: every vehicle needs an NPS ORV permit from recreation.gov and the four required items on board.

Mapping estimates from Southern Shores Town Hall on N. Virginia Dare Trail in normal traffic; summer weekend turnover on Duck Road runs much longer in both directions, and the Bypass south of Kitty Hawk backs up at the Nags Head lights. Beyond the pavement at Carova you are on sand at sand speeds — go near low tide and run the air-down calculator first.

Where the Jeep earns it

Three ways to use a Jeep from Southern Shores.

~21 mi north — no NPS permit

Carova & the wild horses

The year-round beach driving nearest to Southern Shores, and you start north of the Kitty Hawk merge. Air down where the pavement ends, stay below the high-tide line, keep fifty feet from the horses, and buy the summer county beach-parking permit before you go.

~45 min south — NPS permit

The Bodie Island ramps

Cape Hatteras National Seashore starts just south of Whalebone Junction; Ramp 4 puts you on the Bodie Island beach. Buy the NPS ORV permit for the Jeep’s plate before you arrive and check the day’s access map — ramps close on short notice for nesting birds and turtles.

In town — top down

Duck Road, the woods & the soundside

Southern Shores is a residential town under a maritime forest, with no commercial strip on its beach — so the in-town drive is the doors-off run up Duck Road to Duck’s waterfront boardwalk, the shaded loop through the Duck Woods streets, and a sunset on the Currituck Sound side. Bikes beat the Jeep on the multi-use path beside Duck Road; the Jeep is for the trips the path cannot reach.

The road

This is the town everyone drives through on a summer Saturday.

Southern Shores is where the northern Outer Banks funnels: four lanes of US-158 come off the Wright Memorial Bridge, meet NC 12, and everything bound for Duck and Corolla squeezes onto Duck Road, one lane each way. The town has been working with Duck, Kitty Hawk, both counties and NCDOT on the check-in and check-out day backups since December 2014, and it restricts seasonal cut-through traffic on its residential streets — on summer weekends, obey the seasonal signs rather than trusting a map app’s shortcut.

Leave for Carova early and aim for low tide; come back mid-afternoon, ahead of the southbound push through Duck. For the Bodie Island ramps, roll out before mid-morning to beat the Kitty Hawk and Nags Head lights. Save long runs for midweek — Saturday and Sunday are rental-turnover days on both roads. And book a Jeep that comes to the house, so the one trip you skip is the one to a counter.

Southern Shores Jeep rental FAQ.

Yes. Southern Shores is inside the standard delivery band our hosts cover, which runs from Corolla down to Nags Head, so delivery to your Southern Shores rental home is arranged during booking. The town sits just past the point where US-158 meets NC 12, before the road narrows toward Duck, so a check-in-day handoff is usually reachable before the northbound crawl builds. Each vehicle’s booking page states how its handoff works.
No. Section 20-109 of the Town Code makes it unlawful to operate any vehicle on the ocean beach within the Town of Southern Shores, and the ordinance lists jeeps by name; section 20-108 bans driving on the dunes. There is no season, no permit and no exception for rentals — the only vehicles allowed on the sand are ocean rescue, police, public works and other town-authorized entities. The town’s own Beach Rules page says it in one line: driving on the beach or dunes is prohibited.
Southern Shores has no public beach access. Every walkover in town is owned and maintained by the Southern Shores Civic Association (SSCA), and its parking areas — Hillcrest Drive and Triangle Park — require a current SSCA guest parking pass, which your rental company or host supplies if the home is an SSCA member. Town-owned beach-access lots are permit-only for property owners (135 spaces, no guest passes), SSCA and Chicahauk passes are not valid in them, and parking on any street is prohibited unless a sign says otherwise. Ask your rental company for the pass before you drive to the beach, and keep it on the windshield.

Yes. The Bodie Island ramps are Cape Hatteras National Seashore, so each vehicle needs an NPS ORV permit from recreation.gov and must carry a low-pressure tire gauge, shovel, jack and jack board. Our beach-ready rentals include the deflator and gauge, tow strap and shovel; confirm the jack and board with your host at handoff. The Hatteras Island page covers the permit and ramp hours.
No — there is no counter anywhere in our system. You request the Jeep online through OBX Drive, availability and the final price are confirmed with you, you pay by secure checkout, and the Jeep comes to your Southern Shores rental. The request form works 24/7, including Sunday night.
